Babbling

This morning Claire surprised Mommy and Daddy while they were making breakfast. As we stood in the kitchen, Claire was in her excersaucer playing happily when out of no where she began to say: "Dadadada.......dada.......dadadada........dadada........." in the SWEETEST singsong voice. We were clapping and singing her praises when she began mimicing us as we encouraged her to "dada" some more. This was so exciting! Although I had to explain to Daddy that she wasn't really saying "DaDa", developmentally she was just experimenting with sounds and his prompt response to that was "Shuddup" apparently that is not what he wanted to hear!! :-)

never in my background/career as a speech-language pathologist did i ever get so energized and excited than when it came time to watch first aidan and now calum go through the stages of language acquisition, especially the early ones -- shifting from cooing to babbling to the loooong strings of noisy consonants and vowels to the first words and then word combinations. right now it is a riot for us to listen to calum go yammering onandonandon in what are sentences for him, complete with arm-waving gestures for emphasis, but which we cannot decipher (though there have been real words flung in there now and again in recent months). it really is so exciting!! brian -- keep on getting excited & responding to her 'dadadadadadada' because then she'll get the hint that what she's saying really does have meaning and she'll REALLY begin attaching meaningful labels to you and the world around her...it's no coincidence that universally, in ALL languages worldwide, 'mama' and 'dada' are common first words!! then again, cal's first real word was 'done'. ha!
